Scotland’s Top Exhibition Venue

Formerly known as the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow’s iconic £36 million SEC Centre is Scotland’s biggest exhibition venue.

Situated right in the heart of Glasgow, the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) is also one of the UK’s largest integrated spaces, purpose-built for conferences, events, and exhibitions. The SEC has five interconnected exhibition rooms with a combined area of over 22,000sqm.

Since opening its doors to exhibitors and visitors in 1985, the centre has undergone major expansions. The first was the addition of the SEC Armadillo building in 1997. With its futuristic and stylish curved roof, this has now become a much-loved landmark in the city. With 3,000 seats over three levels, it is also no surprise this has now become one of Europe’s leading conference venues.

In 2013, the SEC Centre was expanded even further to include the SE Hydro, which was designed to accommodate a wider range of conferences and exhibitions, with differing capacity, digital and production requirements.

Today, the SEC Centre can rightly claim to be Scotland’s premier arena for exhibitions, and, with its accessible transport links and prime city centre location, it is the perfect venue for any event.

Travelling to the SEC

The SEC Centre is easily accessible by a number of transport options.

With its very own dedicated train station – Exhibition Centre – the SEC Centre is only a mere 3-minute train ride from the city centre. The good news is there are six trains an hour, departing from Platform 17 at Glasgow Central Station. This station is easily accessible from direct trains from London and Edinburgh.

If you wish to travel by bus, the Riversider 100 runs a regular service from George Square, in the City centre, directly to the SEC.

The SEC Centre is within easy reach of Glasgow International Airport and Glasgow Prestwick Airport – both of which are international airports, with regular flights to and from London. The airports are well connected to the city by train. The closet is Glasgow Airport which is only 20 minutes away, with the Glasgow Express Service 500 running trains every ten minutes to Glasgow Central. While trains to the city centre run every 20 minutes from Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

History of the Venue

After The Scottish Development Agency decided to build an exhibition centre in Glasgow back in 1979, the disused Queen’s Dock, on the north bank of the Clyde was selected as the site for the new venue.

Work started on the SEC in 1983, using materials from the demolished St Enoch railway station. Upon its opening in 1985, the centre gained the nickname locally as the “The Big Red Shed” – owing to its early appearance as a giant red painted warehouse. However, this nickname was dropped when the exterior of the building was painted grey in 1997.

The centre opened in 1985 with a special concert by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Hall.  The SEC was the main showcase for Glasgow’s year as the European City of Culture, in 1990, and to mark the occasion the venue hosted concerts by Pavarotti, the Bolshoi Ballet and Opera.

In 2008, the venue hosted the Eurovision Dance Contest. The SEC also annually stages the BBC Good Food Show.
