ExCel London is built on London’s Royal Docks, giving the venue a unique history. The Royal Victoria Dock site was opened in 1855 and managed to survive the bombings of World War II before closing in 1981 due to containerisation and increasing popularity of air cargo.
It was almost 20 years later that ExCel London opened on the very same site, following the construction of London City Airport. It was named one of Europe’s largest regeneration projects and has continued to grow, adding hotels and shopping centres, ever since.
ExCel London has since hosted huge global events, such as the European Society of Cardiology, London Boat Show, and the London 2012 Olympics.
