In May, Bel Noyes, a member of Atlantic Fusion, visited our headquarters in Poole while fundraising for Abbie’s Army as part of the “World’s Toughest Row”.
It was inspiring to hear about the team’s journey. Since the Atlantic Fusion team embarked on their challenging race in December, we wanted to share some insights!
Atlantic Fusion
Atlantic Fusion is a rowing team made of 3 women and 1 man, based between London and Poole. The team span two generations, from two rowing clubs, all united by the goal of setting a world record in rowing between 2 continents.
The World’s Toughest Row
The World’s Toughest Row, covering over 3000 miles, began on the volcanic shores of San Sebastian de La Gomera, Spain and will end in Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua.
Testing the group to the limit, Abbie’s Army will battle salt sores, sleep deprivation, hunger, the elements, and some impressive waves! They will even be creating their own drinking water using a desalination pump.
Bel described this endeavour as:
The challenge of a lifetime.
When asked what the key motivators were for taking on such a gruelling challenge, Bel said:
I’ve always wanted to do something that would just stretch me to the limit! There was no reason to say no, there was every reason to say yes.
However, the ultimate goal is:
To raise as much money as possible for Abbie’s Army.
Abbie’s Army
While taking on the Atlantic, Atlantic Fusion has also been raising money and awareness for Abbie’s Army!
The UK-based charity funds research and supports families that are affected by DIPG, a lethal childhood brain tumour.
Once the row is complete, all funds raised by the crew, along with any proceeds from the sale of the boat and equipment, will be donated to Abbie’s Army.
Our Support
Quadrant2Design was excited to contribute banners to Atlantic Fusion to support their fundraising. Back in May, Bel shared that the team had secured their boat and was ready to line up at the start of the race; however, they needed to raise more funds for food and other necessities. Given the challenging nature of the race, each team member requires around 8,000 calories per day!
Looking Forward
In December Atlantic Fusion began their race and are now deep into the row.
